Dear Parents,
This letter is intended to help your family deal with and understand the recent national and world concern with a flu outbreak in Mexico City. There is no reason to panic or be overly alarmed that we are infected with this strain of flu but simple awareness and precautions can be taken to help prevent it and other types of illnesses spreading. Please use the information to begin preparations. Two confirmed cases have been identified in Dickenson County, Kansas (Abilene area). It is important to know that at this time, there is no pandemic flu in Kansas or the United States. Public health officials want people to protect themselves against a possible flu outbreak.
Here are some ways to protect your family:
- Keep children who are sick at home. Don’t send them to school.
- Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
- Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.
- Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.
- People who are sick should stay home from work or school and avoid other people until they are better.
- Treat ill persons the same as with the more common flu viruses by administering pain meds like Tylenol, administering lots of fluids, keeping them as comfortable as possible and seek medical assistance if needed. If the new swine flu virus is suspected contact local and/or county health officials at the numbers listed below.
A checklist to help families prepare in the event of a flu outbreak can be found at http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/checklist.html . This information can also help your family prepare for any kind of emergency.
