Dear Parents,

This letter is intended to help your family deal with and understand the recent national and world concern with a flu outbreak in Mexico City. There is no reason to panic or be overly alarmed that we are infected with this strain of flu but simple awareness and precautions can be taken to help prevent it and other types of illnesses spreading.   Please use the information to begin preparations. Two confirmed cases have been identified in Dickenson County, Kansas (Abilene area). It is important to know that at this time, there is no pandemic flu in Kansas or the United States. Public health officials want people to protect themselves against a possible flu outbreak.

Here are some ways to protect your family:

- Keep children who are sick at home. Don’t send them to school.

- Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

- Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or by coughing into the inside of the elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

- Teach your children to stay at least three feet away from people who are sick.

- People who are sick should stay home from work or school and avoid other people until they are better.

-  Treat ill persons the same as with the more common flu viruses by administering pain meds like Tylenol, administering lots of fluids, keeping them as comfortable as possible and seek medical assistance if needed. If the new swine flu virus is suspected contact local and/or county health officials at the numbers listed below.

A checklist to help families prepare in the event of a flu outbreak can be found at http://www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/checklist.html . This information can also help your family prepare for any kind of emergency.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact your School Nurse or healthcare provider. You can call the school nurse at 620.336.8125 – M/HS, 620.336.8201 – Lincoln Central or 620.839.5203 – Thayer Schools

You can get more information from: The Montgomery County Health Department at 620.331.4300 or Neosho County Health at 620.431.5770 or Visit online at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ , KDHE at http://www.swinefluks.org/ or American Red Cross http://www.redcross.org

Sincerely,

District Long Range Planning

CHERRYVALE-THAYER, USD 447 LONG RANGE PLANNING

(Cherryvale-Thayer) - The Cherryvale-Thayer School District is preparing for its future by embarking on a long range planning process, "USD 447: Building the Future…Bigger, Better, Brighter". The Board of Education has been working with Superintendent Randy Wagoner to gather data to aid in identifying critical issues that will need to be addressed by the district to ensure a bright future for the students in Cherryvale-Thayer.

In January, the Board and administrative team will begin reviewing the data to help narrow key focus areas for the district. Once this work is complete, the school district will begin Phase II of the process which will involve various audiences in the community including parents, business leaders, students and other patrons that do not have children presently attending district schools.

"The ultimate result will be a plan that we, as a district, can use to identify ways to improve our learning environment for students," said Superintendent Wagoner, "This will be an excellent opportunity for the district to take a comprehensive look at our facilities, curriculum, support services, as well as how we communicate with the community about the great things that are happening in Cherryvale-Thayer USD 447."

If you would like to volunteer to serve in Phase II of the plan, tentatively slated to begin in February, please contact the Cherryvale-Thayer School District offices at 336-8130 or email Randy Wagoner at rwagoner@usd447.org so that a short survey can be mailed to you. The survey will ask basic demographic questions about you so that the district can ensure that there is a solid representation of the community in the planning group that is assembled.
